What People Are Saying

Family Connections Testimonials

“My daughter watched the video and read along with the book several times. She enjoys reading and being able to read with her brother is an unspeakable joy! Please continue this service. This is a bond with her brother. As a parent, I also enjoy having my son read a book to his sister. I eagerly and excitedly watched and read the book several times with my daughter. Would you guys please allow him to do more readings? Pretty please!”

Letter from mother of 7-year-old girl who received book and DVD from incarcerated sibling

“This is priceless. God sent. It actually touches my children unlike other means, sure a call is a voice, a letter written words but a book can be held, keep, shared and most important a video unlike a photograph, my children will be able to know that I am right there, in front of them either on their PC or TV. Anytime they pick up a book they will remember that I took the time to care enough to read to them, together. Please continue to bring our kids a smile.”

“Child had full attention. They liked reading along. Ask parent if they would like to give a message about reading ‘Keep Reading!’”

Community Connections Testimonials

“I would like to thank you for another year with Reading Legacies! Our classroom children are so fortunate to have the opportunity to interact with older students. Our school looks forward to Wednesdays when the student readers come. The high school students learn responsibility and leadership while our preschoolers enjoy being read to. Our Early Childhood Education program also has a literacy objective this year to expose children to literacy opportunities in various forms in desires to promote reading at home! Our school is lucky to be involved, and I am personally grateful for Reading Legacies!!”

“My experience in the Reading Legacies was unforgettable. It was a new experience for me but it made me realize that I am important in my community and my contribution has an impact. The small kids we read to are happy every Wednesday they see us. They always asked me ‘are you coming next week.’ This meant a lot to me and the fact that they know we care about them is important. I am looking forward to continue my participation in the program.”

“My experience at Reading Legacies has been wonderful. Not only did I get interested in reading again, but it gave me experience with small children which is something I don’t have that much of since I am an only child. It is a great feeling giving back to my community and I’m grateful to have this opportunity. Hopefully, I will be able to come back next semester to continue volunteering with Reading Legacies.”

“Being a part of this program has helped me so much in life. It has taught me the value in reading and has encouraged me to love reading. Being connected with the children has given me happiness and joy. I love this program.”

High School Student Volunteer

“Before this program, I had difficulty interacting with kids. This program gave me the tools to boost my skills with children. It is easier for me to talk with them when originally I would avoid communication with them. In addition, I had planned to not have any kids when I was older however reading to them each Monday and developing a bond with them has changed my mind. If it wasn't for reading legacies, I would not have had the opportunity to step out of my comfort zone by interacting with kids and make new friends. I am grateful to have gotten the chance to take part in this program and will definitely miss it when I am in university.”

“I had the best experience with the Community Connections Program and I can’t wait to do it next year. I realized that something little that you do can impact a lot of kids. All the kids that were assigned to me have impacted me by seeing them as my younger brothers and sisters. Every time I come, they find a way to put a smile on my face. Which there is no better feelings by feeling appreciated by the kids so thank you for giving me the opportunity to be in this wonderful program, see you guys next year.”

“I think this program is a great opportunity for learning for both the high school students and the preschool students. The joy from seeing the kid’s faces light up when you bring new, exciting books is hard to beat with any other emotion. These kids are also learning a lot and creating relationships that they will always remember.”

“Enjoy seeing the High School students reach out to the community children. Children get excited for Wednesdays! During outside play in the afternoon, the children sometimes see the ‘Readers’ walking home and the children get so excited!! They yell, “Hi Readers” or “Mrs. Russell, look there are the Readers!!”
