Community Connections - providing community service responsibilities for teens in their own local neighborhoods. They are trained, nurtured, monitored, and celebrated as role models after a semester's commitment of reading aloud weekly in a local childcare center. The goal is that these young people will be inspired to stay on a positive pathway in their educational goals, rather than slipping into the detrimental patterns existing in their neighborhoods – ultimately putting them at risk for entering the cycle of crime and incarceration.
Family Connections - providing education for parents and other family members who are incarcerated, on the benefits of being a positive role model for children in their family by reading aloud on DVD. They choose a quality child's book provided by community members, and after reading it aloud on DVD, mail both of these to the children in their family at home. The children are relieved to know their parent is alive and they are still loved by him/her. The parents are impacted greatly by this opportunity to begin participating in a meaningful way with their families again.
Evidence-based outcomes are a high priority of Reading Legacies. We utilize pre and post surveys of our participants, surveys of all collaborating partners as well as family members – providing information on their satisfaction and self-assessed behavioral changes.
